Ripper Strikes in Whitechapel！Reading Moriarty the Patriot is a lot like taking a stroll through a butcher shop。 There’s a ton of baloney on display， no shortage of ham， and， yeah， it happens to be a total sausage fest （I think I used this before to describe this very series， but you try writing 400 reviews a year and see how repetitive you get…）Which isn’t inherently bad， but tonally this series has always taken some weird swings between goofy and overly serious that didn’t always work。 So for Ripper Strikes in Whitechapel！Reading Moriarty the Patriot is a lot like taking a stroll through a butcher shop。 There’s a ton of baloney on display， no shortage of ham， and， yeah， it happens to be a total sausage fest （I think I used this before to describe this very series， but you try writing 400 reviews a year and see how repetitive you get…）Which isn’t inherently bad， but tonally this series has always taken some weird swings between goofy and overly serious that didn’t always work。 So for the story to really stitch these elements together during a Jack the Ripper storyline， of all things， seems about right for what one should expect。And， believe me， if you thought Alan Moore’s From Hell took the Ripper killings in a whole other direction， you can rest assured that this is just a step below that and （arguably） much more ludicrous。 I’m coming to the point with these books where I honestly wouldn’t have it any other way。Part of the reason I’m not as hard on this is that the series finally dialled back on the hard leans into depravity that was the hallmark of earlier stories about torture and hunting people for sport and such。This， instead， turns into a rather sedate communist plot， of all things， and， yes， a story based around the slaying of sex workers who were， in fact， eviscerated is treated with a far more subtle touch （and is thankfully really accepting of said workers） and doesn’t just go for gruesome viscera everywhere。Now， we also have to discuss the first story， where Irene Adler joins the team as James Bonde， says he’ll be living as a man from now on， and somehow manages to be more progressive than the Texas legislature， despite being set in the 19th century。 The fact that Ian Fleming would turn over in his grave at this is just a bonus。Of course， Bonde just has short hair and a binder， but the wholesale acceptance of everybody on the team， save Moran， who gets a really amusing drubbing in the role of That Guy for large parts of Bonde’s introduction， is utterly refreshing。This turns out to be a goofy bank robbery story that goes wrong and ends up tangentially leading to the Ripper arc that fills out the rest of the story， while also giving Bonde a chance to both learn and show off， which is a solid choice for the character。 It’s The Ripper stuff is utterly silly， loosely adapting the case as so many other things have been mere launching pads to whatever the mangaka is dreaming up。 Still， there’s a ridiculous chase sequence that gives literally everybody something to do， no mean feat， but also features some hilarious ‘only in manga’ gunplay。And we even get a little aside where Scotland Yard clearly sucks， so Lestrade tries to bring Sherlock into things， which he seems to be on board for， although he sure hasn’t made himself known by volume’s end。At first， Lestrade’s way of dragging Sherlock into the case seems particular juvenile， but it actually serves as a fairly amusing reminder that Holmes basically is a giant child who needs his interest arrested in a particular way。Some of this is okay， I don’t love the whole explanation for the Ripper name and the plot itself is resolved successfully in ludicrously ‘the plot wills it’ fashion， even if the resultant chase has some of the most fun of the whole volume。 Still， this works for me overall。4 stars - calling this a good book might be stretching my definition， but it IS fun and I had a really enjoyable time reading it， without some of my usual provisos for this series as a whole， so I’ll take the win there。 。。。more

El capítulo 24 es una introducción muy entretenida del nuevo integrante del equipo Moriarty y de como eso cambiara un poco la dinámica del grupo， tiene algo de comedia y es divertido de leer。 Del capítulo 25 al 27 esta el caso de "El fantasma de Whitechapel" en donde veremos una interpretación del caso de Jack el destripador。 La idea es bastante interesante pero es de las más perezosas en ejecución， se llega a las conclusiones de la nada con muy poca información y hay demasiadas conveniencias ar El capítulo 24 es una introducción muy entretenida del nuevo integrante del equipo Moriarty y de como eso cambiara un poco la dinámica del grupo， tiene algo de comedia y es divertido de leer。 Del capítulo 25 al 27 esta el caso de "El fantasma de Whitechapel" en donde veremos una interpretación del caso de Jack el destripador。 La idea es bastante interesante pero es de las más perezosas en ejecución， se llega a las conclusiones de la nada con muy poca información y hay demasiadas conveniencias argumentales。 。。。more

In Chapter 24 [The Adventure of Four Servants]， it’s more focused on Adler （now Bond， lol I still feel cringe regarding the name） gaining Moran’s trust。 It’s the establishment of Moriarty and Co。 to absorb Bond on the front line of their group。 By the end， I love the easy flow of how Moran and Bond working together。 In Chapter 25-27 [The Phantom of Whitechapel Act 1-3]， I love how they introduced new character， Instructor Jack who played huge role during Moriarty Brothers’ childhood。 The idea wh In Chapter 24 [The Adventure of Four Servants]， it’s more focused on Adler （now Bond， lol I still feel cringe regarding the name） gaining Moran’s trust。 It’s the establishment of Moriarty and Co。 to absorb Bond on the front line of their group。 By the end， I love the easy flow of how Moran and Bond working together。 In Chapter 25-27 [The Phantom of Whitechapel Act 1-3]， I love how they introduced new character， Instructor Jack who played huge role during Moriarty Brothers’ childhood。 The idea where there’s another association who shared the same goal with Moriarty but different method。 They intended to create a revolutionary force that costs innocent life。 Meanwhile， this volume reminded us where Moriarty stands。 Despite wanting change， Moriarty being different from others— they’re ready to sacrifice themselves along the way （mentioned in previous volume）。It’s the ideology of extremist and patriot highlighted。 Also， the crises at stake regarding Whitechapel’s status is handled well。 And we’re all aware how an organisation can take advantage on this issue， something that might spread its influence if isn’t contained well。 The one move that Moriarty did is brilliant yet risky。With that cliffhanger end， how can I not continue the next volume right away HAHAHAH at least， finishing the ongoing act。 。。。more

TW: Graphic violence， murder， guns SPOILERS AHEAD！ The first half of the book is quite heavy。 However， we finally get to see James Bond in action。 He proves to be a worthy member of the Moriarty gang。 Long story short， the plot and character development in this one are amazing。I'm not surprised when William orchestrated the bank heist to break the tension between Moran and Bond。 He loves killing two birds with one stone。 Moran initially failed to treat Bond as an equal but after the heist， he be TW: Graphic violence， murder， guns SPOILERS AHEAD！ The first half of the book is quite heavy。 However， we finally get to see James Bond in action。 He proves to be a worthy member of the Moriarty gang。 Long story short， the plot and character development in this one are amazing。I'm not surprised when William orchestrated the bank heist to break the tension between Moran and Bond。 He loves killing two birds with one stone。 Moran initially failed to treat Bond as an equal but after the heist， he became impressed with his quick thinking。 And the tension finally eases。 All thanks to William but the two of them are oblivious。 Louis and Fred caught on at the end。 I can't wait for them to work together again。I love the changing room scene， by the way。 Not Moran saying that his body was sculpted by Michelangelo。 （He's not wrong。。。） Also， Bond and his high heeled shoes are so cute。 An older character is introduced this time。He goes by the name of Jack Rayfield。 He used to be a butler of the Moriarty brothers when they were younger。 He's mostly known as 'Jack the Ripper。' That's the start of The Phantom of the Whitechapel Act 1; a gruesome and heavy arc。The story revolves around an imposter who taints the moniker。 Rayfield contacted the crime consultant to help clear his name e。g dispose of the imposter。 （The real Jack the Ripper is so shameless， flirting with Bond， wtf） It was also revealed that Jack was the one who taught the Moriarty brothers the 'Art of Killing'。 As the number of innocent murders of women increases in the slums of The West End， the Chapel folks fought with Scotland Yard。 Both parties are trying to solve the murders but due to the latter's reputation of dismissing their problems in the past， Whitechapel turned into a battlefield。William assumed that the imposter has something to do with this power shift。Instead of focusing on the murder of the women， Scotland Yard's priority is to put down the Whitechapel militia instead。 I hate Chief Inspector Arterton。 He doesn't care about the murders at all。 He only cares about being in power and controlling those below him。Lestrade tries to persuade Holmes to take on the case。Sherlock investigates with John without the help of the yard。I love the theatrics of Acts 2 & 3 so much！！ Seeing all the gang working together just warms my heart。 All of them have different skills and talents。 They really work well as a group。 It's bloody amazing。I didn't expect the fake 'Jack The Ripper' to be a group。 All of them are disgusting but WILLIAM AND LOUIS are HERE TO PUNISH。 Here， it ends with a cliffhanger。P/S: The bonus pages are so adorable！ ALL OF THE CHARACTERS ARE IN UNIVERSITYYYY CAN THEY MAKE A SPIN-OFF OF THIS？ I WOULD READ OR WATCH IN A HEARTBEAT。 。。。more

Tenía un poco de miedo de que en este tomo bajase el nivel con respecto a los dos anteriores y al arco anterior。 Y para que mentir， un poquito si que lo ha hecho， pero muy poco， mucho menos de lo que me temía， en general sigue la sobresaliente evolución de esta historia， que cada vez me sorprende más y mejor， me está gustando mucho y estoy disfrutando de su lectura y de su visión del mundo de Sherlock Holmes。En el primer capítulo vemos como el personaje de James Bond se adapta a su nueva vida de Tenía un poco de miedo de que en este tomo bajase el nivel con respecto a los dos anteriores y al arco anterior。 Y para que mentir， un poquito si que lo ha hecho， pero muy poco， mucho menos de lo que me temía， en general sigue la sobresaliente evolución de esta historia， que cada vez me sorprende más y mejor， me está gustando mucho y estoy disfrutando de su lectura y de su visión del mundo de Sherlock Holmes。En el primer capítulo vemos como el personaje de James Bond se adapta a su nueva vida dentro de la familia Moriarty， y como va encontrando su lugar dentro de la misma。 Me han parecido que esta parte de la trama ， y el tema de la transexualidad en la historia， se han introducido muy bien en la historia， de manera muy orgánica y muy bien llevada。 Me ha gustado como han hecho encajar a Bond dentro de la banda， tanto en este capitulo como en él resto del tomo， su evolución y su forma de actuar ha sido muy interesantes y muy bien llevadas。 Me ha gustado que sigan permitiendo al personaje desarrollarse， me preocupaba un poco， al final del tomo anterior， que una vez contada su historia de fondo no permitieran al carácter realizarse aún más。 Si sigue así， creo que puede darnos muy buenos momentos dentro de este manga。 Por cierto， me gusta la dinámica que ha establecido en este tomo con Moran， la relación es muy interesante a todos los niveles por lo rica que es y nos ha dejado muy buenos momentos a lo largo del volumen， momentos de todo gusto y condición。 Además， este capítulo nos ha permitido ver algo que había quedado muy desdibujada en los últimos tomos en favor de la propia trama: la manera en que los miembros de familia Moriarty tienen un rol dentro de la organización， y como saben trabajar en equipo en favor de las misiones。 El resto del tomo se centra en un nuevo arco。 Aparece el antiguo maestro de Will y los demás， quien en su juventud fue un experimentado combatiente， poseedor de unas habilidades asesinas excepcionales。 Ahora alguien está matando a prostitutas en el barrio marginal de Whitechappel bajo el sobrenombre que adquirió: Jack el Destripador。 Está situación está causando grandes tensiones entre los habitantes del barrio y una Scotland Yard que nunca se ha preocupado por ellos， y que ahora parece más interesada en atrapar al asesino por su propio orgullo que en salvar a los vecinos。 Creo que lo que más me ha gustado de este arco es que en él he hallado lo que creo que le faltaba a la historia para sobresalir: aportar algo realmente original y diferente al canon de Sherlock Holmes。 A lo largo de los años han aparecido diversos pastiches， fan-fics， novelas y demás historias alternativas que nos presentaban como él célebre detective emprendía una investigación para averiguar la identidad del no menos célebre asesino， haciendo que ellos se enfrentaban。 Y realmente， el contexto que han planteado los autores para introducir al famoso asesino en serie en su historia me ha parecido muy original， el contexto social que le han dado me ha parecido muy diferente a como se ha introducido a Jack el Destripador en otras historias ambientadas en el mundo Sherlockiano。 A falta de seguir leyendo como acaba el arco， cuando salga el siguiente tomo， todo me ha parecido muy depurado， cada pieza ha encajado muy bien dentro de la trama， y no hay hilos sueltos。 Y curiosamente， este caso que William y los suyos se dedican solo a investigar， les acerca más a su idea original de crear un mundo mejor。 Por otro lado， vuelvo a resaltar que aquí está muy bien llevado el trabajo en equipo de toda la banda， y que la tensión se ha estructurado de tal forma que me ha tenido en vilo de principio a fin， era sobresalto tras sobresalto。 A la espera de ver como va a actuar Sherlock en el próximo volumen， tengo mucha curiosidad por ver como se cierra este arco。El siguiente tomo sale en breves。 Pero no sé qué voy a hacer para poder esperar a que sigan saliendo， pues parece que van apareciendo en el mercado a cuenta gotas， y me parece una tortura， no estoy muy segura de que voy a poder aguantar la espera。Pd: comentario randon y estupido del día， que no aporta nada: en la viñeta en la que aparecían haciendo experimentos químicos， Sherlock y Watson me han recordado a Yzma y Kronk en el laboratorio en esa maravilla tan infravalorada de Disney que es “El Emperador y sus Locuras”。 。。。more

This was a good volume！ The four servants chapter was excellent， I like seeing Bond joining the team and making friends， I'm sure he and Moran will be good buddies。Heck yes trans James Bond， the only James Bond I like。However， the Whitechapel mystery failed to engage me。 I prefer when the Moriarty do the crime， not solve it （even when solving the crime involes doing more crime， it's stil less fun）。 This was a good volume！ The four servants chapter was excellent， I like seeing Bond joining the team and making friends， I'm sure he and Moran will be good buddies。Heck yes trans James Bond， the only James Bond I like。However， the Whitechapel mystery failed to engage me。 I prefer when the Moriarty do the crime， not solve it （even when solving the crime involes doing more crime， it's stil less fun）。 。。。more
